Handcrafted Jewelry
One of October’s birthstones, tourmaline is remarkable for its extraordinary range of natural color, appearing in shades of black, green, pink, red, blue and multicolored crystals.
Its name derives from the Sinhalese toramalli, associated with “mixed gems,” an appropriate name for a stone that was historically mistaken for emerald, ruby and other gemstones before being recognized as distinct by modern mineralogy.
Tourmaline has been used in adornment for centuries, with large deposits in Brazil, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Madagascar and the United States. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, pink and red tourmaline from California was prized in China, where it was carved into jewelry and decorative objects.
The Studio Henbane Tourmaline Collection brings together handcrafted jewelry featuring the stone in its many forms, from deep black and earthy green to translucent pink and naturally variegated strands, paired with hand-worked copper, beadwork and other natural materials.
